Round Square

Round Square is a world-wide association of more than 60 schools on five continents sharing unique goals. Round Square Schools, which Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School is a member of, make a strong commitment beyond academic excellence to personal development and responsibility on a local and global level. This is achieved by participating in community service work, building projects, exchange programs and leadership conferences within our local community and around the world.

Round Square Schools are founded on a philosophy embracing six pillars which can be summed up in the acronym IDEALS: Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Action, Leadership and Service. The IDEALS of Round Square serve as the framework for our curricular and co-curricular programs, meshing with the IB programs of study and our school’s philosophy. We believe in the development of citizenship and global mindedness, whether it's through monthly visits to the Calgary Drop-In Centre to serve food, involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program, promoting environmentalism or assisting in a community service project as far away as Peru.

These IDEALS are evident at all grade levels. For example, our Grade 11 Agencies Program serves to promote active citizenship and international mindedness. Internationalism and democracy is woven into our social studies, language arts and political thinking classes. Our Senior High students participate in two international Model United Nations conferences, and our outdoor education opportunities encourage students of all ages to develop leadership skills. Environment has become a key focus throughout junior and senior high while service is evident is much of what we do.

Even Elementary students beginning in Grade 1 learn about globalism and a commitment to service through our Humanitarian Outreach Program (HOP) and the Terry Fox Run which they participate in, along with the rest of our students.
