Elementary School

Welcome to the Elementary School at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. We provide elementary children from Grades 1 through 6 with a dynamic learning environment grounded in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Our teachers provide inquiry centered learning environments which meet the individual needs of each of our students. They learn to challenge themselves and apply critical thinking strategies. They also explore art, French, music and physical education from education specialists.

Children in Elementary are encouraged to appreciate the outdoors not only by playing outside on our beautiful campus, but also by participating in Outdoor Education. This program begins with on campus orienteering experiences and progresses in the upper grades to include overnight hiking and cross-country ski trips. These activities develop independence, an appreciation for nature while building lasting friendships and memories for our students.

International mindedness is a foundational concept at STS. Children are encouraged to look for service prospects in their own backyards or to connect with global organizations in pursuit of making life better for other children in the world. We help our students become aware of other cultures and languages and seek opportunities to connect learning to an international focus. Our aspiration is to graduate children who confidently address global issues and believe that they can make a positive difference in our world. A sense of community is also nurtured in Elementary where young children feel a part of our unique School with a student population that continues right through to Grade 12.

The Elementary School has an enrollment of approximately 230 students who are supported by a talented faculty of classroom inquiry teachers, specialists, a program strategist, a librarian, a PYP Coordinator and a Divisional Principal. In addition, we encourage parents to support their children’s learning through volunteering opportunities.

We are committed to building the scholarship, leadership and character of each of our students in a safe, loving and caring learning environment.
